QTS Group has recently completed works on the newly opened Levenmouth Rail Link, working as part of Scotland’s Railway.

The £116million Rail Link, which is being funded by the Scottish Government and delivered by Network Rail and ScotRail, has reconnected Leven and Cameron Bridge to Scotland’s railway network for the first time in more than half a century.

The Rail Link was officially opened by the First Minister and public service began on the 2nd of June following a multi-discipline project which required close working and collaboration from several railway contractors including QTS, Story Contracting, AmcoGiffen, RSAS and Siemens.

Over the 9.5km route, works began with environmental reviews and vegetation clearance, managing invasive species and removing any trees that could pose a threat to the line. QTS then began fencing replacement along the route boundary and public access areas totalling up to more than 20km of fencing installed.

Earthwork remediations were also carried out by QTS with significant slope regrading, stone reinforcement and the installation of more than 2000 soil nails. Approximately 1500m2 of embankment extensions were done to improve alignment, provide infrastructure support and to protect from river scour. Additional to QTS’s usual work types the team removed and infilled two redundant Under-bridges, along with the installation of over 200 anchors to improve existing retaining walls at Leven Station and Tullybreck.

This has been a massive project for the Scottish railway industry. Reconnecting through Leven and Cameron Bridge Stations means this area will have vital access to railway links that they haven’t had for over 50 years.
We’re extremely proud of the collaborative effort from our team and those from Story, AmcoGiffen, RSAS, Siemens, BAM, Atkins, SPL and Network Rail. It’s always a heartening experience to see so many contractors working well together to deliver exceptional work.

Through this ethos of collaboration where “best for project” decisions were made, QTS Group stepped in to aid the overall delivery programme by undertaking 16,500m2 of track formation preparation and ballast installation to full Railway Track Renewal Specification along with 2,500m of Track Drainage, while the RSAS track delivery team resource were committed on another long-term planned renewal project.
